Made in Japan is a double live album by English rock band Deep Purple, recorded during their first tour of Japan in August 1972. It was originally released in December 1972, with a US release in April 1973, and became a commercial and critical success.
Getting a professionally mixed copy of the complete Deep Purple "Made in Japan" concerts has been one of my musical Holy Grails since I first slapped my import copy of that album on my turntable back in 1972. Also would have loved some more in depth interviews with the band and crew about the trip to Japan and the concerts. The included reproduction of the tour program is a nice touch as an original today commands big money when you can find one and is somewhat rare. The family tree is interesting but not essential.
Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the . and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music. Since reorganizing with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums - Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head - and used the material to build a fierce live show.
Made In Japan' captured the legendary band at what was perhaps the peak of their powers. On May 19, Universal Music is set to reissue the landmark album in a special deluxe package that is sure to have fans drooling. The album, recorded during a three-night stand in Japan during the band's 1972 'Machine Head' tour, features the classic 'Mach II' line-up, caught in full power here, knocking out killer renditions of songs like 'Highway Star,' Child In Time,' Space Truckin,' and of course, 'Smoke On The Water
Made in Japan is about as good as a live album gets. This is also one of the strengths of the album, and a reason why it is held in such high regard. To say that all members are on top of their game is quite the understatement, as every corner of Made in Japan is filled with fantastic moments. What really makes Made in Japan so great, however, is the tremendous improvement the band make on every single track. Highway Star, not only opener on Machine Head but here as well, is probably the most accurate recreation of its original, but still features enough new sounds.
