This recording was not only Louis Armstrong's finest record of the 1950s but one of the truly classic jazz sets. Their nearly nine-minute version of "St. Louis Blues" - with witty vocals, roaring Young trombone, and a couple of long majestic trumpet solos - is arguably the greatest version of the oft-recorded song.

Louis Armstrong's finest album of the '50s was without a doubt Louis Armstrong Plays . Its carefree, joyous vibe permeates a record that's filled with frivolous trumpet solos, romping rhythms and Armstrong's signature growl. William Christopher Handy is dubbed the Father Of The Blues for his important role in the development of modern music by developing Blues as the popular format of music in the Roaring Twenties.

Thank God that Handy was still alive to hear what Armstrong did to his work-which, simply put, was to sprinkle it with magic. The liner notes quote Handy as saying, during the recording sessions, that Satch's performances brought tears to his blind eyes. The CD includes false starts and some rehearsals, which are in their own way delightful: The listener hears the artists' finished products as well as the work that it took to polish them to perfection.
