Donald Harrison joined the Skinner firm in July 1927, and slowly began to influence how Skinner organs were built. After several years of conflict between Ernest Skinner and Arthur Marks, Harrison was appointed Vice-President and Tonal Director of Æolian-Skinner in 1933. Beginning in 1954, Aeolian-Skinner produced a series of LP records titled The King of Instruments. These LPs are devoted to the tone and history of the modern organ. Volume 1, The American Classic Organ, contains a descriptive discussion written over both sides of the LP cover by Tyler Turner and Joseph Whiteford on the beginnings of the American classic organ

The American Classic organ, on the other hand sought a return to design principles of the 18th century, particularly the development of clean diapason choruses topped by several brilliant mixtures, as advocated by the Organ Reform Movement. These organs also contained stops and expressive divisions evocative of the romantic organ writing of the 19th- and early 20th-century French school. I have used the technique at my disposal to produce instruments which I consider suitable for expressing the best in organ literature. I have no use for copying successful works of the past; such a method is doomed to failure. Aeolian-Skinner pipe organs built under Harrison's direction are considered by many to be the apotheosis of the American organ builder's art for their period.

Harrison prevailed, and eventually Skinner was driven out of the company he had founded. The pipe organ - "the King of Instruments" - has long been worshiped by Bach lovers but underappreciated by other classical music fans. At music conservatories, organists have been outsiders joined by a common passion. All that may be changing thanks to a pipe organ renaissance underway in this country and swell of interest generated by this book.

The arrival of George Donald Harrison at Skinner and the later merger into the Aeolian-Skinner Company in the early 1930′s was followed by a change in organ philosophy. While the bulk of Harrison’s work was as a tonal designer and voicer, Harrison is most famous for his association with the American Classic organ design. This design concept was partly a reaction to the proliferation of romantic-orchestral symphonic organs that had been in fashion to that point. The American Classic Organ brought Mutations and Mixtures back and properly voiced, clarity and transparency of tone again became important, and same for the achieved versatility from combining the tonal characteristics of the 18th century with modern instruments.
