Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is a double album by the English–American blues rock band Derek and the Dominos. Released in November 1970, it is best known for its title track, "Layla", and is often regarded as Eric Clapton's greatest musical achievement. The other band members were Bobby Whitlock on keyboards and vocals, Jim Gordon on drums, Carl Radle on bass. Duane Allman played lead and slide guitar on 11 of the 14 songs.

The story goes that Tom took the boys to see an Allman Brothers’ show, where Eric and Duane Alllman formed an instant friendship and bond that lead to Duane playing nearly all of the second guitar parts, and though Duane was reluctant to join the group as a full fledged member, he did sit in with Derek & The Dominos for a couple of. gigs while they were in Florida. Regardless of Duane joining the band or not, his influence was strongly infused, and impossible to ignore.

From these meager beginnings grew his greatest album. Duane Allman joined the band shortly after recording began, and his spectacular slide guitar pushed Clapton to new heights. Then again, Clapton may have gotten there without him, considering the emotional turmoil he was in during the recording. He was in hopeless, unrequited love with Pattie Boyd, the wife of his best friend, George Harrison, and that pain surges throughout Layla, especially on its epic title track.

Layla and Other Love Songs – the double-album that Derek and the Dominos recorded over the next 6 weeks showcased the creative singing and songwriting axis formed by Clapton and the Memphis-born Bobby Whitlock, who had grown up around the city’s legendary Stax Studios.

Derek And The Dominos attempted to record a second studio album, but the project was sunk by drugs and paranoia, and Layla remains their stellar legacy. It touched people where they needed to be touched, Whitlock says. Listen on Apple Music. As the only album recorded by the band, Layla And Other Love Songs stands in history as Clapton’s most definitive milestone, but also as the herald of his fall from grace. This album was the divide between the before and the after in his career, as the downward spiral of his addiction hit rock bottom shortly after the release.
