Songs for Beginners is British singer-songwriter Graham Nash's debut solo studio album. Released in May 1971, it was one of four high-profile albums released by each partner of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping Déjà Vu album of 1970. It peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, and the single "Chicago" made it to No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has been certified a gold record by the RIAA.

Songs for Beginners is Graham Nash's solo debut apart from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Released in 1971, it is a collection of songs that reflect change, transition, and starting over. The set was recorded in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the immediate aftermath of Nash's traumatic breakup with Joni Mitchell. It is a true, mostly introspective songwriter's album full of beautifully performed and wonderfully recorded songs that reflect transition, movement, the desire to look backward and forward simultaneously. Like the aforementioned offering, this one is star-studded in its choice of players and singers: Crosby, Chris Ethridge, Jerry Garcia, Rita Coolidge, Clydie King, Venetta Fields, Dave Mason, Neil Young (under the pseudonym "Joe Yankee"), David Lindley, Bobby Keys, Phil Lesh, Dallas Taylor, and drummer John Barbata reflect some of the personnel on this heady yet humble session.

Graham Nash’s solo debut came out in the wake of both the huge triumph of CSNY’s beloved album Déjà Vu and his wrenching breakup with Joni Mitchell. Songs for Beginners captures this bittersweetness in perfect detail, surrounding plaintive numbers like Military Madness with bright, rootsy guitars and turning heartbreaking tunes like Simple Man -supposedly written the day Nash and Mitchell parted ways-into sweet, harmony-laden expressions of humility. About Songs for Beginners. Nash released his solo debut, Songs for Beginners, in the spring of ‘71 – a time in which the singer/songwriter found himself in the midst of both professional and personal flux: CSN&Y were in a temporary split and Nash’s relationship with Joni Mitchell recently ended. The album was a hit with critics, peaking at No. 15 on Billboard and spawning the top 40 hit Chicago. Songs for Beginners Q&A.

If you lean more towards the ROCK & ROLL end of things, you might find your attention wandering-the album absolutely never goes beyond mid-tempo, and with the possible exception of "Chicago"/"We Can Change The World", nothing can even remotely qualify as a 'rocker'.
