Spanky and Our Gang was an American 1960s sunshine pop band led by Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane. The band derives its name from Hal Roach's Our Gang comedies of the 1930s (known to modern audiences as The Little Rascals), because of the similarity of her surname with that of George McFarland (Spanky). The group was known for its vocal harmonies. The group's first album was released by Mercury Records on August 1, 1967, with three popular songs that were released as singles.

Spanky & Our Gang started out in Chicago with a sound somewhere midway between the original Jefferson Airplane and the original Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a folk-rock ensemble with a few jazzy twists and some funny between-song sketches.
Spanky and Our Gang attempted to be all things to all people, and with the changing counter culture of the day, they just seemed to have stepped through the door at the wrong moment. coming off as a mere fashion statement, rather than a band to be reckoned with. The music of this album is all over the map, and it’s that conceptual lack of continuity that prevented this group from ever rising above hit singles, with songs that were pleasant to listen to in rotation, but were nevertheless embarrassing and awkward to drop onto your stereo, as your parents were there to love every minute of it as mom was.
