Listen free to Elliott Smith – XO (Pitseleh, Bled White and more). XO is the name of the fourth album recorded by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. Smith's first work on a major label, it was released by DreamWorks Records on August 25, 1998. Bong Load Custom Records released it on vinyl LP, which has since gone out of print. Vinyl copies of XO remained rare until a re-release by Plain Records in 2008. The singles from XO were "Waltz (XO)" and "Baby Britain"

I came upon Elliott Smith late in my musical progression, but once I decided to check him out, I went on an Elliott Smith album spree. I picked up New Moon, Roman Candle, and XO. Randomly, I played XO first and I was not prepared for the musical odyssey Smith set out for me. Ironically, the opening statements of Sweet Adeline were exactly what I expected from the album- interpersonal lyrics with simple yet brilliant guitar.

Album · 1998 · 14 Songs. XO begins like the three albums before it-with a minimal guitar figure and Smith's delicate vocals. Then it does something different: it explodes with drums, cello and piano, setting the tone for the indie icon's most sonically ambitious recording to date. Lushly arranged, these songs are some of Smith's most vibrant. Waltz, No. 2 (XO)" feels like an Irish drinking tune, while "Baby Britain" channels The Beach Boys and "Amity" is pure driving rock. It's the perfect marriage of intimate songwriting and nuanced production.

It was amid this clatter of railway and smoke that Elliott Smith’s XO holds such sway in my memory. I was just in my first few months of a drama degree in Trinity. I loved music but fell into theatre. But, a few hours spent alone on an old train in the midst of a dark December evening are seared into my memory by the album, and the sounds of Smith accompanied me on many journeys to follow.
