The birthday of William Shakespeare, the third child and the eldest son of this locally prominent man, is unrecorded, but the Stratford parish register records that the infant was baptized on 26 April 1564. It is quite possible that he was born on 23 April, but this date has probably been assigned by tradition because it is the date on which, fifty-two years later, he died, and perhaps because it is the feast day of St. George, patron saint of England. Since then, at least two dozen other nominees have been offered, including Christopher Marlowe, Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth I, and Edward de Vere, 17th earl of Oxford.

William Shakespeare was the son of John Shakespeare, an alderman and a successful glover (glove-maker) originally from Snitterfield, and Mary Arden, the daughter of an affluent landowning farmer. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptised there on 26 April 1564. All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts. As You Like It, Act II, Scene 7, 139–142. with two tragedies: Romeo and Juliet, the famous romantic tragedy of sexually charged adolescence, love, and death; and Julius Caesar-based on Sir Thomas North's 1579 translation of Plutarch's Parallel Lives-which introduced a new kind of drama.

Why does Romeo and Juliet translate so well to dance? Sarah Crompton sits in on rehearsals at both the Royal Ballet and English National Ballet to see the celebrated tragedy dramatically reshaped. For Irek Mukhamedov, who was a famously dramatic Romeo in the MacMillan version and is now helping to coach at ENB, it is the music that is the key to everything. It is very dramatic, touching and expressive, he says. I say to young dancers: ‘You must understand the music, learn to sing it, and then the words in your heart or your mind will speak through your body. It might seem a strange way to perform Shakespeare – without words. But when dance finds that level of expressiveness, it speaks as loudly as any sonnet. Romeo and Juliet is in repertory at the Royal Opera House, London WC2.
